E20 Petrol With 20 Percent Ethanol Becomes Mandatory in India: Here's Everything You Need to Know
Starting April 1, 2026, E20 petrol, a blend of 80% petrol and 20% ethanol, becomes mandatory in India, following a notification from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. This initiative aims to reduce vehicular emissions, dependence on crude oil imports and foster sustainable mobility.
E20 Petrol With 20 Percent Ethanol Becomes Mandatory in India: Here's Everything You Need to Know
E20 petrol has become mandatory in India from today, i.e. April 1st 2026. Discussions about making E20 petrol as standard in the country were going on for quite some time. This February, the Ministry Of Petroleum and Natural Gas of India has issued a notification that oil companies will have to sell E20 petrol in the country from April 2026. This mandate required oil companies in India to sell regular petrol with 20 percent ethanol blend from the beginning of the new fiscal year.
E20 Petrol & Its Impact: Explained
E20 fuel consists of a blend of 80 percent petrol and 20 percent Ethanol. This fuel is considered to have lower vehicular tailpipe emissions. Along with reducing tailpipe emission, ethanol blended fuel also reduces the dependence on fuel imports and helps in building a sustainable mobility model. The Indian government has been actively advocating clean mobility solutions which includes the likes of CNG, biofuel, green hydrogen, electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid vehicles, flex-fuel vehicles and ethanol blending.
Switching to E20 fuel not only has environmental benefits but there are major economic benefits as well. India is a major importer of crude oil and blending petrol with ethanol reduces the reliance on imports at a macro level economically. Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India (MoRTH) has been an active advocate for ethanol blending and he even has a vision to adopt E85, E100 and biodiesel for economic and environmental benefits. Since ethanol is manufactured in India, blending and using ethanol as fuel also helps in creating a sustainable ecosystem for the future. Also reducing dependence on oil imports also safeguards India’s interests in situations where the global supply chain is impacted, like the recent war.
Ministry Of Petroleum and Natural Gas: Notification
The notification shared by the Ministry Of Petroleum and Natural Gas in February 2026 stated, “The Central Government hereby directs that the oil companies shall sell Ethanol Blended Motor Spirit with percentage of Ethanol up to twenty per cent as per the Bureau of Indian Standards specifications and having minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95, in the States and the Union territories: Provided that the Central Government may, in special circumstances, allow the oil companies to sell Ethanol Blended Petrol meeting the RON specifications as per Bureau of Indian Standards, for specified period and regions.”
E20 Fuel: Pros & Cons
Pros
Apart from environmental and economic benefits there are more upsides of using E20 fuel. Ethanol blended E20 petrol has a higher octane rating which improves acceleration and performance. The high heat vapourisation of Ethanol also reduces intake temperature which results in a better precombustion air-fuel mixture density and also increases volumetric efficiency. E20 petrol also has higher anti knocking properties.
Cons
On the downside, using E20 fuel in non-compatible vehicles can result in premature wear and tear of rubber parts and gaskets. Also the energy density of ethanol is lower than petrol, this results in a marginal drop in fuel economy.
