Next-Gen Tesla Roadster Global Debut on October 1; Will Elon Musk’s Claim of Fastest Accelerating Car in the World Stand?
Tesla is set to unveil the production version of its next-generation Roadster on October 1st 2026 following several delays since its initial concept reveal in 2017.
Next-Gen Tesla Roadster Global Debut on October 1; Will Elon Musk’s Claim of Fastest Accelerating Car in the World Stand?
Elon Musk led Tesla will globally unveil the production-spec version of the next-generation Roadster on October 1st 2026. The electric sports car was first revealed as a concept car back in 2017 and has since faced several delays. The upcoming debut is expected to reveal the final design, performance specifications and whether Tesla has been able to deliver on the acceleration figures previously claimed by Elon Musk.
Tesla confirmed the date through its official social media channels with the messages “10.01” and “Go for launch”. The unveiling is scheduled to take place in Waco, Texas, with Roadster reservation holders invited to attend the event.
Will Tesla Roadster Become the Fastest Accelerating Car in the World?
Acceleration is likely to be one of the key talking points when the production Roadster is unveiled. Tesla originally claimed a 0-60 mph (0-97 kmph) time of 1.9 seconds when the concept version of the second-generation model was introduced in 2017. Elon Musk later claimed that the Roadster could complete the same acceleration run in just 1.1 seconds with the proposed SpaceX package.
Tesla has not confirmed whether the 1.1-second figure applies to the production-spec car. It is also unclear whether the claimed figure will be achieved with the SpaceX package fitted to the vehicle.
On a later date Musk even made an extremely highly ambitious claim that the Roadster can accelerate to 60 miles in under 1 second. If Tesla meets the claim, the Roadster could challenge some of the quickest-accelerating production cars currently available.
The biggest question will be whether the production-spec Roadster can achieve Elon Musk's claimed 1.1-second 0-60 mph acceleration time and support Tesla's positioning of the car as one of the world's fastest-accelerating production vehicles.
SpaceX Package Gets Four Rear Outlets
Tesla's teaser images have provided a glimpse of the production Roadster's rear-end design. The car gets a large rear wing and full-width LED tail-lights, while four horizontally arranged outlets can also be seen.
These outlets are believed to form part of the SpaceX package. Musk has previously said that the proposed system would use rocket thrusters to improve acceleration, braking, top speed and cornering.
Nearly 1,000 Km Range Claimed For Original Roadster
The Roadster concept was originally announced with a claimed range of 620 miles, or around 998 km. Tesla also claimed a top speed of more than 250 mph (over 402 kmph).
The company has not yet confirmed whether these figures remain applicable to the production-spec model. Updated battery, range, top speed and acceleration figures are expected to be announced during the global debut.
Past & Present Delays by Tesla
Tesla unveiled the second-generation Roadster in November 2017 and initially planned to start deliveries in 2020. The production programme subsequently missed several proposed timelines. The Roadster isn’t the first model from Tesla to face delays. Prior to the Roadster the Cybertruck was also delayed multiple times.
In November 2025, Musk said that the Roadster would launch in April 2026. However, the production version was not unveiled by that deadline. However in Tesla’s defence the Roadster is said to have undergone changes during its development. Earlier plans reportedly involved technology derived from the Model S Plaid, while the latest version is expected to use a more bespoke construction and carbon-fibre elements.
