The Nissan Terrano name is making a comeback, but this time in a completely different form. Once known in India as Nissan's version of the first-generation Renault Duster, the Terrano has now been reimagined as a boxy plug-in hybrid SUV. The new model was previewed at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show and has now been spotted in its production form in international markets.
Key Highlights:
  • Nissan Terrano nameplate returns as a boxy plug-in hybrid SUV.
  • Production-spec model spotted after its 2026 Beijing Auto Show preview.
  • Developed with Chinese automaker Dongfeng for global markets.
  • Could offer over 1,000 km of combined driving range.
Developed by Nissan in partnership with Chinese carmaker Dongfeng, the new Terrano is primarily aimed at markets such as China, ASEAN and the Middle East. While there is no confirmation of an India launch yet, Nissan could potentially showcase the SUV in the country as a halo product.

The production-spec Terrano looks largely similar to the concept showcased earlier this year, although Nissan has made a few design changes. The SUV gets a revised headlight housing, updated elements on the front and a new alloy wheel design.
The overall boxy shape has been retained, giving the SUV a rugged appearance. At the rear, the arm holding the spare wheel appears shorter than on the concept version.
The design takes inspiration from the Nissan NX8 SUV, while the plug-in hybrid powertrain puts the new Terrano in the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) category in China.

Nissan Terrano PHEV: Expected Range

Nissan has not revealed detailed technical specifications of the Terrano PHEV yet. However, the SUV is expected to offer at least around 100 km of electric-only range.
With the petrol-electric powertrain and a larger overall driving range, the Terrano could potentially cover more than 1,000 km on a single charge and fuel tank combined. Final battery, engine, power and range figures are expected to be announced closer to its market launch.

Will the Nissan Terrano PHEV Come to India?

The Terrano name has strong familiarity among Indian buyers, thanks to the SUV that Nissan sold here alongside the Renault Duster. However, the new PHEV has no direct visual connection with the earlier model.
Nissan has not announced any India launch plans for the new Terrano. The SUV could, however, be showcased in India to gauge customer interest, especially as the company looks to expand its electrified vehicle portfolio.
