The Indian division of the Japanese automaker Yamaha all set to take the wraps off the all-new R2 sports bike today. The Yamaha R2 motorcycle will be making its global debut in India today, i.e. August 27th 2026. The R2 will slot into Yamaha's fully faired sports bike line-up between the R15 and R3, marking the automakers entry into the 200cc performance motorcycle segment.
Pre-bookings for the Yamaha R2 are already open through the company's official website for Rs 10,000. The booking amount will be adjusted against the final on-road price, while customers who pre-book the motorcycle will get priority delivery, subject to availability. While Yamaha is yet to reveal all the details, here is what to expect from the upcoming R2.

Yamaha R2: Expected Design

The Yamaha R2 is expected to follow the company's R-series design philosophy, with a fully faired body and a sporty riding stance. The motorcycle is likely to draw inspiration from the R15, although its larger dimensions and higher positioning in the range should give it a more substantial road presence. The R2 will sit above the R15 but below the R3, making its positioning particularly important for Yamaha in the Indian market. Weight could be one of the Yamaha R2's biggest advantages. If Yamaha manages to keep the R2 relatively light, it could offer sharp handling and a strong power-to-weight ratio. This would also allow the motorcycle to retain the agile character associated with Yamaha's R-series.

Yamaha R2: Expected Engine

The biggest change over the R15 is expected to be the engine. The R2 is likely to use a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder motor with a displacement of more than 200cc. Reports suggest that the engine could have a capacity in the 200-220cc range, although Yamaha has not confirmed the exact displacement.
The engine is expected to have a high-revving character, similar to the R15's 155cc motor. The R15 currently produces 18.1 bhp and 14.2 Nm, while the R2 is expected to offer a significant increase in performance.

Yamaha R2: Expected Features

Yamaha has not yet confirmed the complete equipment list. However, the R2 is expected to come with features aimed at making it competitive in the premium 200cc sports bike segment.
Potential equipment could include riding modes, ABS and a bi-directional quickshifter. The motorcycle is also expected to get a digital instrument console and other features already seen on Yamaha's higher-end motorcycles. The final specifications will be revealed at the launch tomorrow.

Yamaha R2: Expected Price

The Yamaha R2 is expected to be positioned above the R15 in India. The current R15 range is priced from around Rs 1.57 lakh to Rs 1.98 lakh, ex-showroom. The R2 could be priced in the Rs 1.9 lakh to Rs 2 lakh range, depending on the variants and equipment offered.
