Nissan Unveils Updated e-POWER Hybrid System For Qashqai In Europe
Nissan is introducing its third-generation e-POWER hybrid technology in Europe, debuting in the Qashqai SUV set for release in September 2025. This innovative system utilizes an electric motor for propulsion, with a petrol engine solely for electricity generation, eliminating the need for external charging. Key enhancements include improved fuel economy, reduced emissions, and increased power output. The compact design features a new turbocharged engine and extended service intervals. Future expansions include models for North America and Japan by FY26, starting with the Rogue and Elgrand.
Nissan Unveils Updated e-POWER Hybrid System For Qashqai In Europe
Nissan has announced the European debut of its third-generation e-POWER hybrid technology . This latest version will be first featured in the Qashqai SUV, which is scheduled to reach European markets in September 2025. The system will expand to other global regions including Africa and Oceania, followed by North America and Japan in FY26.
System Overview and Key Features
The e-POWER setup continues to rely on an electric motor to drive the wheels, while a petrol engine functions only to generate electricity and charge the battery. Unlike standard hybrids, the wheels are not directly powered by the combustion engine. This system allows for electric motor-based driving without the need for external charging.
Nissan e-Power
In the latest version, Nissan has introduced a new 5-in-1 modular unit integrating the electric motor, generator, inverter, reducer and increaser. It is more compact and lighter than previous versions. The petrol engine, a newly developed 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged unit, is built specifically for the e-POWER system and includes the STARC combustion method to increase thermal efficiency.
Efficiency and Performance Updates
The third-generation e-POWER system offers several updates over its predecessor:
- Fuel economy improved to 4.5L/100km (WLTP), with a projected driving range of up to 1200 km on a full tank
- CO₂ emissions lowered from 116g/km to 102g/km
- Cabin noise reduced by up to 5.6dB
- Power output increased by 14.7 bhp, reaching 202.5 bhp
- A 13.5 bhp boost in Sport Mode
The engine also uses 0W16 oil to reduce internal friction and includes a new turbocharger that helps lower engine speed during highway driving. Nissan has also extended service intervals from 15,000km to 20,000km for the Qashqai.
Eiichi Akashi, Chief Technology Officer and executive officer, Nissan Motor Corporation, said “This new, third generation e-POWER system redefines Nissan’s hybrid technology providing smooth and responsive driving in all conditions. We’ve embedded close to a decade of learnings to ensure the system is more efficient, more refined and more competitive. The launch with Qashqai is just the beginning, we look forward to delivering this advanced powertrain to customers in North America and Japan in FY26, with other markets to follow”.
Market Rollout and Future Models
The updated e-POWER system will appear next in the North American market via the upcoming Rogue model in FY26. In Japan, it will power the fourth-generation Elgrand minivan. All Qashqai units with the new system will be assembled at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in the UK.
