Ford Issues Recall For 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E Over Software Update Error

Ford has issued a voluntary recall for 234 units of the 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E due to an improperly recorded software update. The affected vehicles, produced between May 27, 2020 and May 24, 2022, may still have a defect that could cause the high-voltage battery’s main contactors to overheat, potentially leading to a sudden loss of power while driving.

Ford Issues Recall For 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E Over Software Update Error

Ford Motor Company has announced a voluntary recall of the 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E affecting 234 units that were produced from May 27, 2020 to May 24, 2022 due to an issue with a previous software update.
The affected vehicles were initially part of Safety Recall 22S41 (NHTSA 24V-412), which required an update to the Secondary On-Board Diagnostic Control Module (SOBDMC) and Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) software. However, Ford has discovered that some vehicles were incorrectly recorded as having received the update, despite not actually having the corrected software installed.
This means that the original defect—overheating of the high-voltage battery’s main contactors during DC fast charging or rapid acceleration—may still be present. If the contactors overheat, they could deform or weld shut, potentially leading to a sudden loss of power while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
Ford identified the issue in November 2024 when an internal quality audit flagged inconsistencies in software installation records. On December 19, 2024, Ford informed NHTSA of this concern; the service tool data confirmed that the software state on the service tool at the time of installation matches the Field Service Action (FSA) software release for most vehicles. In January 2025, the cross-functional team created database records to store all software lineage part numbers for previously launched FSAs. On February 21, 2025, Ford’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field action .
Owners of the recalled Mustang Mach-E vehicles will receive notification letters beginning April 14, 2025. They will be instructed to visit a Ford or Lincoln dealership for a software update at no cost. Technicians will validate the installation before marking the recall as complete.
Ford has also outlined a reimbursement program for owners who may have paid for these repairs before the recall announcement.
