Kawasaki Motors U.S.A. has issued a voluntary recall for 216 units of 2024 Z e-1 ABS and Ninja e-1 ABS motorcycles that were manufactured between July 3, 2023 and October 19, 2023 due to a potential battery connection defect that could lead to power loss.
According to the report filed by Kawasaki to NHTSA, Repeated attachment and detachment of the batteries may result in a failed connection between the batteries and the vehicle, which can result in a loss of power. There is a risk that the vehicle’s drive motor may stall due to improper connection with the batteries, increasing the risk of a crash.
The issue first surfaced in March 2024, when a Kawasaki quality assurance test revealed a vehicle stalling due to a collapsed battery terminal. Further inspection in April 2024 confirmed that some batteries included test components without the necessary anchors. Despite a supplier-led inventory check in August 2024, an additional defective battery was found. By February 19, 2025, Kawasaki determined that more units in circulation might have this defect and initiated a recall.
To deal with the issue, Kawasaki has asked Owners of affected motorcycles to have their battery terminals inspected at a Kawasaki dealership. If the anchor inside the connector is missing, the battery will be replaced. Inspected and repaired units will be marked with a white label near the battery and the frame number.
Kawasaki will notify owners via mail and distribute service bulletins to dealerships. The company has also outlined a reimbursement program for those who may have already incurred repair costs due to this issue.
