Kia America, has issued a voluntary safety recall for 342 affected units of 2025 model year Kia EV9 vehicles that were manufactured between October 11, 2024 – December 19, 2024 due to a potential defect in the rear gear drive unit (GDU) that could lead to a loss of motive power.
According to the report filed by Kia America to NHTSA, The subject vehicles are equipped with a front and rear gear drive unit (GDU), each containing a drive motor that powers its respective axle. Due to a supplier welding error in a certain production lot, the motor shaft inside the rear GDU may become damaged, resulting in reduced acceleration and motive power.
Kia has confirmed that all EV9 vehicles manufactured from December 20, 2024, onward at Kia Georgia are equipped with properly welded rear GDUs, ensuring that newly produced models do not have this issue.
The defect can lead to a sudden reduction in power, which could compromise vehicle safety, particularly at high speeds or in traffic. Drivers may notice abnormal driveline noise and a "Check AWD/4WD" warning message before experiencing performance issues.
To deal with the issue, All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Kia dealer. Dealers will replace the rear gear drive unit (GDU) with a new one. Kia will reimburse owners for repair expenses already incurred pursuant to Kia’s General Reimbursement Plan filed May 1, 2024.
All EV9 vehicles produced at Kia Georgia beginning on December 20, 2024 are equipped with a rear GDU with a properly welded motor shaft.
