TVS Motor Integrates ION Mobility Assets To Boost EV Push In Southeast Asia
TVS Motor Company has acquired select assets and intellectual property from ION Mobility through its Singapore-based subsidiary, TVS Motor (Singapore). The company also confirmed it has exited its equity position in ION Mobility, a startup it had previously backed.
The acquisition is expected to support TVS Motor’s efforts to expand its electric vehicle (EV) operations across Southeast Asia, a region known for its high motorbike usage and growing demand for electric mobility.
ION Mobility Capabilities Added to TVS
ION Mobility is known for its in-house capabilities across product design, engineering, electronics, software, and supply chain. These capabilities will now be part of TVS Motor’s EV operations. The integration aims to support the company’s product development and localisation strategy for Southeast Asian markets.
Leadership Changes and Product Plans
Following the acquisition, James Chan, founder and former CEO of ION Mobility, has joined TVS Motor Company as Senior Vice President. He will lead the company’s business strategy in the ASEAN region and will oversee the rollout of the M1-S electric platform.
The M1-S platform has been in development at ION Mobility and will now be launched under TVS Motor’s EV portfolio. It is designed for daily urban use and has already received attention in regional markets.
Current EV Footprint and Capabilities
TVS Motor currently offers the iQube electric scooter and reports over half a million users globally. The company holds more than 650 patents in electric mobility and has built internal capabilities in battery systems, software platforms and control units.
Sharad Mohan Mishra, President Group Strategy, TVS Motor Company, said: “We were an early strategic investor in ION Mobility, attracted by their focus on delivering smart, sustainable, and exciting mobility solutions for ASEAN markets. Our ‘Reimagine 2030’ vision strongly aligned with their mission. With the acquisition of ION Mobility’s assets, IP and core team, we are thrilled to bring their entrepreneurial energy, design thinking and engineering strength into TVSM. Combined with our R&D depth, quality systems, and manufacturing scale, this partnership positions us to accelerate market penetration and grow our share across Southeast Asia.”
