The Yamaha FZ has been a popular nameplate in India ever since its debut back in 2008. Fast forward to 2025, the market has evolved and in the 150cc segment, where several popular models such as the Bajaj 150, TVS Apache 160, Hero Xtreme 160, Yamaha has not only debuted a refreshed avatar in the form of the FZS Fi-Hybrid but has also equipped with smarter tech and claims better fuel efficiency. Now, to test this claim and if the model stands out in this contested space, we recently tested it and here’s what we think about it.

Yamaha FZS Fi Hybrid: Design
At first glance, you can easily identify its FZ lineage - thanks to its muscular streetfighter design and bulky proportions. In fact, the Japanese manufacturer hasn’t done much in this department as the standard FZ itself is a good-looking machine. However, a few tweaks have been made to give it a distinct identity from its sibling. That said, you now get to see turn indicators that have been integrated onto the fuel tank shrouds, resulting in a meaner, modern look. Besides that, there’s also a rather aesthetic change that has brought the key slot onto the fuel tank. This however, is more subjective than objective in our opinion. No doubt, it has enhanced the aesthetics a bit.

Furthermore, the motorcycle remains unchanged in terms of design, save for refreshed graphics and new colour options. There’s a single-piece seat sloping towards the rear, a sleek LED taillight and angular bodywork - in line with its sporty character. Other likeable touches include coloured rims, multi-spoke alloy wheels and a big, chunky, 282 mm disc in the front, body-coloured panels near the engine and body-coloured touches in the engine trim.
Overall, much hasn’t changed but the bike does have a distinct identity and could be recognised on the road. As for the build quality, there are no odd panel or fitment gaps, the materials used are quite sturdy and it is one of the areas which impressed us the most about this model.

Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid: Ergonomics and Comfort
Now another area where the FZ-S Fi Hybrid impresses is its accessibility. The saddle height stands at 790 mm from ground which makes it accessible for most riders. For instance, I am 5’8 inches tall and I could easily place my feet flat on the road. The rider’s triangle is designed to balance comfort and control. The handlebar is wide and placed high, while the footpegs are slightly set back. The seat is well-cushioned, and offers ample space too. This setup lets the rider sit upright for relaxed cruising, but the seating and overall ergonomics also make it easy to switch to a sportier stance for spirited riding.
The hybrid FZ tips the scale at 138 kgs, which makes it very lighter - even in comparison to some of the sporty 125cc motorcycles. That said, the motorcycle is quite easy to maneuver and dart into spaces while overtaking. The turning radius too, is tight and is a big plus in traffic-ridden conditions of city roads.
Talking about the suspension, you get telescopic forks in the front - which in my opinion is a bit of a letdown given the pricing as other rivals are already offering USD forks at this price point. Nevertheless, it works really well. You also get a 7-step adjustable monoshock at the rear. The suspension setup, overall, is a bit on the firmer side given its sporty character but is also soft enough to comfortably eat the usual potholes and undulations we come across. So kudos to Yamaha for that.
Braking duties are managed by a 282 mm disc at the front and a 220 mm disc at the rear, supported by single-channel ABS. During our rides, the rear brake did perform well and provided good confidence. The front brake, however, felt a bit weak at the start and requires a firmer pull on the lever to engage effectively. It still does the job, but you may need some time to get used to the setup. That said, it definitely isn’t a deal breaker.

Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid: Engine and performance
This is where things get interesting. Now, before we get going into the details, let’s discuss what the FZ hybrid delivers on paper. It draws its power from the same 149 cc, single-cylinder motor as its FZ siblings that pumps out 12.2 bhp at 7,250 rpm and 13.3 Nm at 5,500 rpm. This engine comes mated to a five-speed gearbox.
Now, one of the major highlights, as the product name itself suggests, is the hybrid integration. You might have heard of it in the brand’s scooter range and it is made possible due to a Smart Motor Generator (SMG). In simpler terms, this system adds a subtle torque boost at low revs for quicker acceleration. Additionally, there’s also a Silent Stop & Start (SSS) system that kills the engine at idle and restarts quietly with a clutch pull. This makes the starts silent and also helps in enhancing fuel efficiency, especially in start-and-stop traffic conditions.

In our real-world mileage testing, the FZS Fi Hybrid delivered an impressive mileage of 45 km while burning a litre of fuel. Where the FZ Fi-Hybrid actually excels is in refinement levels. The engine stays calm and composed across the rev range and there are minimal vibrations felt either on the handlebar or footpegs. Throttle response is crisp, acceleration is linear and the light clutch with effortless shifts makes it complete joy in traffic.
It's happiest cruising around 90kmph, though it can go par 100 kmph if pushed but then vibrations creep in and power tapers off. Handling is nimble and confidence-inspiring, perfect for weaving through congestion. For commuters, it's spot on.

Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid: Features
Yamaha didn't skimp here, this is one of the most feature-packed bikes in its class. The star is the 4.2-inch colour TFT display, which is sharp, readable in bright sunlight and packed with info. The standout? Its Day/Night Mode: Auto switches seamlessly between a bright white background for sunny rides and a dark mode for tunnels or flyovers. It's intuitive and genuinely useful. You also get Bluetooth connectivity for turn-by-turn navigation, music controls, traction control and more.

Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid: Verdict
The FZS Fi Hybrid may not channel the raw excitement, but as a modern commuter, it's a winner. We loved the engine's refinement, linear power delivery and everyday rideability. On top of that, the bike offers something that a rider in hunt for a daily commuter will keep atop their priority list: fuel efficiency. All things considered, the hybrid FZ might not be an exciting product to ride on weekends, but it truly is an everyday-workhorse that offers ample performance, impressive fuel economy and is well-loaded in terms of practical features.
If these are the boxes you wish to tick in a 150cc commuter, the FZ Fi-Hybrid (priced at Rs 1.44 lakh) is definitely worth consider buying.
