Earlier locations in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex and Delhi’s Aerocity functioned largely as touchpoints for display and brand familiarisation. The Gurugram centre, however, signals Tesla’s shift toward a structured retail and after-sales network as it continues its measured entry into India.
The company formally entered the market earlier this year with two fully imported Model Y variants. Prices start at Rs 59.89 lakh and Rs 67.89 lakh, with both versions brought in via import and attracting a 70 percent import duty. The duty structure makes the Model Y almost 30 percent more expensive than its US price.
Tesla’s expansion in India is being overseen by Sharad Agarwal, who took charge in November. Agarwal previously headed Lamborghini India and held senior sales roles at Audi India. Commenting on the occasion Sharad Agarwal, General Manager, Tesla India, said, “Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. We are opening our first all-in-one Tesla Center in Gurugram — combining experience center, after-sales service, delivery, and charging station in one place. By building charging infrastructure that fits people’s daily lives, we are making electric driving convenient for everyone in India. The network will expand rapidly for a seamless EV experience. Our direct business model has sparked huge excitement for electric mobility, driving strong adoption and lasting confidence in sustainable transport across India.”
Tesla now competes directly with models such as the BYD Seal, BYD Sealion 7, MG Cyberster, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, BMW iX1, Mercedes-Benz EQA, Volvo EC40 and others. For now, Tesla’s operations in India remain limited to imported vehicles and retail infrastructure. High import duties and a developing service ecosystem continue to shape Tesla’s approach in one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets.
