Volkswagen Virtus, Taigun Manual Transmission Top Variants Discontinued in India

Volkswagen India has discontinued the manual transmission option for the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol versions of the Taigun and Virtus. The larger engine is now offered only with an automatic gearbox, while manual options remain limited to the 1.0-litre petrol variants.

Volkswagen Taigun

Volkswagen has removed the 6-speed manual transmission option from the 1.5L TSI variants of the Volkswagen Taigun and Volkswagen Virtus sold in India. The 1.5L turbo-petrol engine is now available only with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission across both models.

Manual Option Now Limited to 1.0 TSI Engine

Customers looking for a manual gearbox will now have to choose the smaller 1.0L TSI petrol engine. This engine continues to be offered with a six-speed manual transmission on both the Taigun and Virtus . The larger 1.5L engine can no longer be paired with a manual gearbox in any trim.

Background on GT Plus Variants

The Taigun GT Plus earlier offered both manual and automatic transmission choices with the 1.5L engine. The Virtus GT Plus, on the other hand, was initially sold only with an automatic gearbox. A manual option was later introduced to cater to buyers seeking a manual setup with the larger engine. That option has now been withdrawn.

Powertrain Details Remain Unchanged

The 1.5L turbo-petrol engine continues to produce 148bhp and 250Nm of torque. There are no mechanical changes to the engine or the automatic gearbox.
This powertrain remains positioned as the higher-output option in both model line-ups.

Reason Behind the Decision

Volkswagen has not issued an official statement explaining the change. However, according to multiple media reports, demand for the 1.5L manual variants declined over time. The move appears to be aimed at reducing low-volume variants and aligning the range with current buying trends, where automatic transmissions account for a larger share in higher-powered petrol cars.

Dealer Stock May Still Be Available

Some dealerships may still have limited stock of the discontinued manual variants. Availability will depend on existing inventory at individual outlets.

Similar Move by Skoda

This change follows a similar decision taken earlier by Skoda. Manual transmission options for the 1.5L variants of the Skoda Kushaq and Skoda Slavia were discontinued last year, leaving the manual gearbox available only with the 1.0L engine.
